Cacilda Langa
Community Name: Mussengue
We would like to introduce you to Cacilda Langa,
who has been selected as your sponsored child. Cacilda
lives with her father, a brother and a sister in a thatched roof home.
The family's home is in Mussengue
within the impact area of Manjacaze where Save the Children works.
We hope that you will enjoy your friendship with Cacilda, who is described
by her family as being bright.
The activity in which Cacilda participates most is helping with household
chores. She presently attends
primary school.
Mussengue Mussengue is a community within the larger district of Manjacaze
where approximately 889
families reside. Manjacaze is about 247 kilometers north of Maputo, Mozambique's
capital. Agriculture is
the main source of income for the villagers of Mussengue.T~eir maili crops
consist of ~)roundnuts, beaus,
cassava, sweet potatoes, rice, and sesaine. The most common diseases in
Mussengue include malaria, STD's
and respiratory infections. Access to quality education, health care and
clean water are major limitations for
children in this community. Access to primary education is another obstacle
for the majority of children as
only 1048 (56%) of 1868 school-aged children are going to school.
Manjacaze Manjacaze is a district in the Province of Gaza, situated north
of the District of Xai-Xai. It is a
rural area where most people rely on agriculture to make their living.
The most prevalent crops are maize,
cassava, sweet potatoes and peanuts: the climate is hot and humid all year
round. Sixteen years of war, in
addtion to frequent drought, has significantly reduced crop productivity
and greatly lowered the standard of
living in the district.
The projects that are available in Cacilda's community include school construction,
teacher training and
water and sanitation.
School Construction is a project whereby Save the Children has been building
schols and houses for
teachers while equipping them with benches, desks, and school supplies
such as books, paper, map, chalk
and pencils. School Construction is the most critical activity of our work
in the sponsorship villages. The
objective of this project is to make available a better/durable infra-structure
for teachers and students while
contrubuting to increased access to Primary Education
teacher training aims at ensuring quality education for children. Save
the Children provides teacher's
training to upgrade the skills of primary teachers in teaching methodology
and lesson planning. The training
is delivered by the Save the Children education staff togetehr with government
officials from the District
Department of Education. This activity also includes pedagogical supeervision.
